Chor Bazaar

Our nephew Jack at Jack Corner

One of our favorite places in Mumbai is Chor Bazaar, a grid of shopping precincts ranging from "bric a brac" to push trolleys, metal trunks, hardware, tools and car parts. The area is pedestrian only, when I say that I mean that there are no cars but you need to be always conscious of the high speed motorbikes treating the street like a slalom course.

Ada making friends with the local wildlife

There are goats everywhere as the locals are mainly Muslim and, without making generalizations  they always like some mutton. This adds charm as goats are my favourite animal both alive and dead.  They are intelligent, personable, hardy, eat anything, produce great cheese and are good to eat.

Bollywood poster central

Among the bric a brac shops you can find second hand watches, old movies posters, furniture, glass ware, toys, sun glasses and religious artifacts and iconography.  One of Kate's favourites are the movie posters, both Hollywood and Bollywood.  One store happened along a private collection from a a deceased estate and purchase the whole stock pile.  Initially, you question their authenticity but some of the movies are so obscure, the quantities are so limited for each movie and the posters are not widely available that they seem very genuine.

There is a great selection of furniture although it is more expensive than Jogeshwari.  That said, it is easy to find antique and refurbished solid wood folding chairs for with two new canvas seat backs for half the price of  a cheap plastic folding chair at Target.

Our new family member

We have recently found a retailer of religious statues tucked away in an obscure part of Chor.  He had an amazing collection of Hindu and Buddhist figures in sandstone and granite which have been procured from various collectors over time.  They appear genuine and at the price, it doesn't matter if they are not!
